Last year, it seemed like everyone was taking all their beauty trend cues from the ‘90s: The bixie haircut, thin eyebrows, and extra-dark lip liner returned with a vengeance. Throughout 2025, though, we’ve seen more of the 2010s’ influence, especially when it comes to hairstyles. Side bangs and deep side parts have made a comeback, and the undercut has received a braided upgrade. We’re here to talk about the latter look.

According to Shanna St. Cyr, a New York City-based braider, side braids are poised to be this fall and winter’s biggest braid trend. It’s a hybrid style, combining cornrows plaited, going down on one side of the head (to mimic a side-shave buzzcut) with a sew-in cascading down on the other side. For someone who wants to mimic the cool flair of having one side of your head shaved without actually doing any clipping, St. Cyr says these braids are the ideal option.

    Cassie Side BuzzcutGetty Images

St. Cyr points to Cassie Ventura’s now-infamous 2009 partial buzzcut as one of the inspirations for the braided look. “In the streets of New York, everyone's calling it the Cassie braid,” she says. Helena Koudou, a New York City-based braider, confirms Cassie’s influence “I remember when Cassie came out with this style and girls were willing to shave their heads,” she says. “We now have a style that’s more convenient.”

St. Cyr also sees Beyoncé’s influence in the look. “I feel like it’s Lemonade braids reinvented,” she says, referring to the long blonde cornrows the singer had in the visuals for her sixth album.

We saw glimpses of the style on it-girls like content creator Rese this summer, but braiders predict it will really take off in the colder months. The edgy vibe of side braids is a natural departure from the more flowy, feminine styles that usually dominate in the summer (like boho braids).

    Side BraidsCourtesy of @Princess_rese

It’s more functional, too. “People loved cornrows [in the front] and curls in the back as a summer style,” St. Cyr says. However, the stylist notes that it's hard to wear a hat with that style. Shifting the cornrows from the front to the side and switching out a curly sew-in for a straight or wavy one allows you to wear a knit hat or a fitted cap without it looking bulky, making this style perfect for the cooler months.

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably seriously considering getting side braids. However, before attempting to DIY the look, St. Cyr strongly urges you to schedule an appointment with a professional braider. Even if you can finesse cornrows yourself, she warns that making sure your sew-in lays flat, nailing a crisp part, and getting the placement of the cornrows just right can be tricky. “It can look bulky if you don't know how to layer the weave to be flat on one side,” she says.

Also, be sure to have a few inspo photos with you so your stylist knows exactly what you’re hoping for—especially for the braid side. “The cornrows can be any design you want,” says Koudou. “Two girls can have Cassie braids that look slightly different in the way the cornrows are created.” You can opt for zigzag cornrows, which may give your look a grungy vibe or a swirly pattern to add a more feminine touch.

How to maintain your side braids

When it comes to maintaining your side braids, follow the general protective style upkeep rules, including moisturizing your scalp weekly with a lightweight braid spray. Koudou says you’ll also want to tie your hair down at night, as doing so is pivotal to making the look last as long as possible (about three to four weeks).

How to style your side braids

“This style requires using heat to blend your hair with the weave, so be prepared to curl or flat-iron it when it’s time to step out,” Koudou says. She recommends always using heat protection before wielding your hot tools. We love the Best of Beauty winner, Drybar Hot Toddy Heat Protectant Mist, a lightweight formula that protects hair from temperatures of up to 455 degrees Fahrenheit. She also suggests using flexi rods or a satin heatless curl headband on the sew-in before you head to bed. “That way, when you wake up, you have juicy bouncy curls with some fresh cornrows,” she says.

Bella Hadid is in Paris! I repeat, Bella Hadid is in Paris! The model jetted off to the City of Lights to walk a few selected runways during Paris Fashion Week, and while she may have been wearing spring and summer 2026 designs, she kept a little bit of cozy fall energy alive with her hot chocolate-colored manicure.

Before she stalked the runway at Saint Laurent in a marigold dress with bold ‘80s shoulder pads, Hadid was spotted leaving her hotel in her signature effortlessly cool street style, complete with blonde pigtail braids and dark brown nails. Hadid’s nails were short and filed into a soft squoval shape, then painted a luscious brown shade with just a hint of purple-red color for a dash of vampy glam that still felt down to earth—which is honestly kind of Hadid's whole style philosophy, when you really think about it.

October is right on the horizon, so go ahead and indulge in the deepest, darkest, most luxurious manicure and pedicure colors—even if it still feels like summertime outside. Turns out that Hadid's brownish-purple shade is right on trend for the season too. “It provides the perfect contrast against neutral tones, adding a pop of color that isn’t overwhelming, as it’s still an earthy tone,” nail artist Sarah Chue recently told Allure in a roundup of the best fall nail polish trends. On toes, we're loving all shades of brown, including light amber and deep espresso shades.

Hadid's polish was MIA when she walked the Saint Laurent runway, but if you want to dupe it from the comfort of home, try Londontown's Lakur in Teak, a plush chocolate; Cirque Colors's Terroir, a cool taupe with a drop of purple; or Essie's Fringes & Saddle, a dark brown shade with red undertones that would be picture perfect on noted horse girl Hadid.

Few Instagram posts can garner more than two million likes in a mere half hour, but if anything can do it, it's Selena Gomez's wedding carousel. Rumors about the Only Murders in the Building star's nuptials with Benny Blanco being this weekend turned out to be 100-percent true, and as soon as a few beautiful photos of the cute couple were green-lighted to be shared with the eager public, fans were double-tapping with tears in their eyes. And when we wiped away our own, we couldn't help but immediately focus on all of the gorgeous elements of her bridal beauty, from a fanciful spin on a classic manicure to her decision to pass on the traditional wedding updo.

Gomez shared 15 slides—both soft-focus photos and and charmingly stylized videos—showing the happy couple in their wedding attire: Blanco in a handsome tux (is that a pastel blue shirt we see?) and the beautiful bride in a lacy high-neck halter gown.

Although the filtering of the photo doesn't allow for the clearest close-ups of the details, a few shots let us see that the Best of Beauty cover star opted for pearly, off-white polish on an elegant oval shape. The color is a quintessential bridal look, but the seemingly iridescent touch gives it just the right amount of modernity and whimsy. And from what we can tell, it seems she may have gotten a pedicure to match.

Instead of a bun or twist, as so many brides wear on their wedding days, Gomez decided to wear her long bob down in a style not unlike how she wore it to the Oscars in March. (What a genius test run!) The deeply side-parted style was a smooth as can be, curving into a voluminous wave at the ends.

    Instagram content

Gomez's wedding makeup was as timeless as it gets: soft, cool-brown shadow, lush lashes, and rosy lips and cheeks in shades that look made for her. (And let's be real: They were probably made by her—or at least her brand, Rare Beauty.)

Gomez has yet to tag her glam team as of the time we're publishing this, but we can't wait to see the additional details her go-to beauty squad reveals over the coming days.

When Taylor Swift launches a new era, she’s doing more than just dropping music. She’s inviting us to revel in the latest world she’s dreamt up. With her engagement to Travis Kelce and the upcoming release of her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, on October 3, fans have plenty of reasons to celebrate. Sequins, rhinestones, and that dazzling aqua-orange palette are practically begging to be worn, danced in, and yes, painted right onto our nails.

For me, half the joy of a new Taylor era comes from finding ways to weave it into everyday life. Nail art becomes more than just polish—it’s a wink to fellow Swifties, a way to feel connected to the larger fan base even if I’m just typing away at my desk. “When you mix the artistry of nails with the devotion of fans, it creates a wearable tribute, something personal, expressive, and instantly recognizable,” says New York City- and New Jersey-based nail artist Erica De Los Santos.

“Taylor inspires trends no matter what she does, and nails are no exception,” says Bana Jarjour, a Los Angeles-based celebrity manicurist. And Swift’s Showgirl era is already making its way into salons.

So what manicure should you get to celebrate TLOAS’s impending drop? De Los Santos recommends any look inspired by sequin-covered costumes, sparkling jewelry, and dramatic spotlights. Vibrant oranges, milky mints, bright blues, and muted peaches from the album cover mingle well with golds and silvers, high-shine gloss, glitter, ombré, and aura fades. “The overall vibe is extravagant, luxurious, and unapologetically eye-catching,” De Los Santos says.

Julie Kandalec, New York City-based celebrity manicurist, educator, and Kiss Nails ambassador, says the trend doesn’t have to include the album colorways: Fans can embrace bold 3D accents, including “gems and feathers (à la stage headdresses), stars, and reflective finishes like metallic and chrome.”

Obviously, the most devoted Taylor mega-fans are booking appointments to get TLOAS nails ahead of the album’s release date, but the experts we spoke to say the aesthetic is also affecting nail art trends in general. That’s likely because the colors lend themselves to other rising fall manicure trends, like crystals and mixed metals. “Whether it’s adding an element of diamond lining to a French or creating something more intricate across the whole manicure, I have no doubt the influence of the Showgirl aesthetic will be seen,” Jarjour says.

As with any trend, experimentation is all part of the fun. “Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and play around,” adds De Los Santos. “Even if that means choosing glitter over a solid color or dark purple over a neutral. There are so many colors and texture combinations that come with the trend. There is something for everyone.”

The Life of a Showgirl nail inspiration

Ready to channel Taylor’s new era at your next mani appointment? Ahead, you’ll find inspo all over the spectrum, from subtle aura fades and gemstone accents to full-on, rhinestone-dripping Frenches.

For a mani that subtly nods to Taylor’s newest era, ombré fades and aura designs are the perfect entry point. Both have been trending across the nail world at large, popping up everywhere from red carpets to TikTok, which makes them an easy way to channel Swift without going full-on costumey. “Ombré blends are perfect for capturing the dreamy mix of her oranges and blues,” says De Los Santos.

“Aura nails also work beautifully to reflect the soft, glowing feel of her album art,” Jarjour says, adding that creating it yourself is easy: “Apply your darker color, then use a small piece of a non-latex sponge to apply the lighter color toward the center. And you can use so many combos. Blend shades like OPI’s I’m Yacht Leaving (a soft blue) and Silicon Valley Girl (a vivid orange) for a look that feels instantly tied to the era.”

A seamless ombré at home is doable with the right technique. As Los Angeles nail artist and OPI global brand ambassador Natalie Minerva explains, “My favorite trick is to use a piece of tape to take off any lint that might be on the sponge to ensure the smoothest application possible. Start with your darker polish, then use the sponge to lightly apply a lighter color about halfway down the nail.”

If you’re short on time or patience, Jarjour recommends Dashing Diva’s Glaze Semi-Cured Gel Art in H2Omg, which requires LED curing, or KISS Fake Nails in Fine ‘N Cool for easy at-home application.

If you want nails that demand just as much attention as Swift’s stage presence, go for a look that sparkles, shimmers, and shines. Eye-catching metallic, glitter, high-gloss, and chrome finishes, as well as rhinestone accents, mimic Swift’s famous bejeweled bodysuits and make your manicure feel glamorous. “You can layer glitter over any base color or add chrome powder to create a high-shine finish, then top it off with rhinestones for extra dimension,” says Jarjour.

If you’re struggling to get your rhinestones to stay put, follow Minerva’s method: Start with a thick, clear drop of builder gel like the Aprés Soft Gel Builder in a Bottle as a base, press the stones into the dot, and cure them in place, then carefully add more gel around the edges without covering the top. Finish with a topcoat, like OPI GelColor Intelli-Gel Super Gloss, to lock the polish and gems in place.

“This album is all about glitz and glam, so the maximalist trend will definitely come into play,” says Jarjour. Maximalist nails let you go full-on showstopper: Think 3D accents, oversize rhinestones, glitter, chrome, metallic foils, and fun textures—sometimes with a different design on each fingertip.

De Los Santos has some fresh ideas for taking your TLOAS maximalist nails to the next level. Oversize rhinestones can be clustered like jewelry, gold studs or chains can be arranged into corset-back details, while sculpted gel waves can be used to mimic the flowing fabric of costumes or stage curtains. “Feather-inspired textures, jewel-encrusted accents, or even fringe-like embellishments can also translate that Showgirl drama onto nails,” she adds.

French tipstaylor swift tloas showgirl french manicure with cheetah print nail artCourtesy of @hopejungnailsTaylor Swift TLOAS Nails blue and orangeCourtesy of @tiffanyabbigailebeauty

If you love Taylor but lean toward simpler designs, French tips are your answer. “Even adding a small amount of glitter or a colored tip can make the mani feel instantly tied to the era,” says Jarjour.

Use a thin brush dipped in the color of your choice, then paint the natural curve of your nail tips for a classic French. If you’re feeling playful, add extra squiggle lines, an animal print, glitter stars, or a touch of gold foil to add sparkle and visual intrigue. Minimal changes like these prove that sometimes less really is more.

I've been perfecting my false-lash technique since high school, when I discovered that the right lash glue could make strip lashes survive eight-hour school days. Eventually, I graduated to professional lash extensions, but after months of upkeep, damaged lashes, and the mounting costs, I couldn’t justify the expense anymore. Going back to strips gave me convenience, but not the customization I wanted. That all changed when I discovered lash clusters, which allowed me to experiment with length and volume in my makeup looks in a way I never could with strips.

But clusters alone aren't magic. The real game-changer is the eyelash glue. Without the right adhesive, even the most fluttery DIY cluster falls flat (or off completely). Over time, I’ve narrowed my favorites down to four lash glues that cover every scenario: formulas strong enough to hold overnight or through a weeklong vacation. Of course, technique matters too. Both your glue application and lash removal can make or break both their longevity and your natural lash health, so I tapped a makeup artist to share pro tips on maximizing hold without causing damage.

Why we love it: False lashes don't stand a chance without the right glue holding them in place, which is why the uCoolMe Bond & Seal Lash Glue is my number-one pick. Designed with a 2-in-1 bond and seal system, this lash glue provides a staggering 150 hours of wear. Despite the strong hold, the formula is hypoallergenic and non-irritating, making it ideal for sensitive skin and eyes while still delivering the kind of staying power you’d expect from pro eyelash extensions. Plus, the eyelash adhesive is fast-drying, waterproof, and sleep-safe. The dual brush design makes application a breeze: the black bond acts like mascara for even coverage, while the white seal locks everything in place and protects against dust, clumping, and flaking.

“I reach for the uCoolMe Lash Bond and Seal whenever I need serious longevity. It’s hands down my favorite glue for long wear. It’s the one I trust on vacations or when I’m crunched for time because once it’s on, it doesn’t budge for over five days. The hold is intense, which means I usually can’t reuse my lashes after, but honestly, I don’t mind since it feels more sanitary that way. I will say this glue requires some experience with application as it’s not as forgiving once the cluster makes contact with the lash cluster, and you should only be putting the glue at the base as opposed to raking it through the lash. Doing this can cause the lashes to clump and not last as long.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

Why we love it: This is the OG lash glue—the one you grabbed before a girls’ night out, tossed in your bag, and knew would keep your strip lashes intact until morning. DUO Striplash Adhesive formula is designed for all-day wear, applies white and dries clear, and keeps both strip and individual lashes firmly in place. Once it dries, the glue peels off your falsies without a mess, making them easy to reuse. If your first placement isn’t perfect, it gives you just enough flexibility to adjust without needing more glue. Unlike some lash adhesives, DUO is applied directly to the lash band with the applicator. A thin line from the squeeze tube is all it takes, and after a quick, 30-second drying time, lashes press into place and stay secure for hours.

The brand offers individual cluster lashes in a wide range of styles and lengths, which are unbelievably natural and lightweight. The glue, specifically the Whisper Light Bond, ensures they stay put without compromising comfort. Its dual-sided design makes the application intuitive. The black or clear micro-mascara brush evenly sweeps the clear formula through each lash for grip and definition, while the precision clear seal tip targets the base to seal it all in for a seamless finish and natural look.

“The whole Lashify experience feels luxurious from start to finish, and the Whisper Light Bond is a big part of that. The lashes are so lightweight and natural-looking, and the glue itself applies smoothly and feels like nothing once it’s on. I like that you can coat from root to tip without stressing over precision, then layer the bond on top for that frosted effect that dries down clear. The hold is strong but still comfortable, lasting me up to three days at a time.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

Why we love it: If you’re looking for a lash look that competes with the salons, look no further than Kiss’s Falscara Bond & Seal. This dual-ended tube makes at-home lash extensions foolproof, priming and prepping your natural lashes on one side and locking wisps in place with the other. The bond is infused with biotin to nourish while gripping lash clusters securely, and the seal is enriched with vitamin E to eliminate tacky residue and keep everything looking seamless. They offer a customizable wear that can hold for 24-hour wear or up to 10 days when paired with the brand’s Overnighter Falscara Bond & Seal.

“Kiss Falscara was my introduction to lash clusters and bond-and-seal systems, which prolong the length of wear of cluster lashes as opposed to the 24-hour wear of regular lash glues. The application is super beginner-friendly. You just swipe on the bond, place your clusters, and seal them in. I love that it gives me a hold that lasts for days but still comes off easily when I’m ready to remove it. Because the glue isn’t harsh, I can actually reuse the lashes, which makes the system even more practical.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best way to apply and remove lashes to maximize hold and minimize damage?

Makeup artist Dominique Gordon emphasizes starting with fit. “When applying a strip lash, you always want to measure and trim the lashes to suit your eyes,” she says. This step prevents lifting at the corners and makes wear more comfortable. She also notes that the glue and application matter. “Allow 5–10 seconds for the glue to set and apply in the center of the eye directly along the lash line. Tuck in the outer and inner corners using tweezers or index/thumb fingers.” Using a brush-on formula gives more control and reduces mess.

When it’s time to take them off, Gordon advises working from the outer corner inward and placing the strip back in its case. “You can also refresh/clean them by using a few Q-tips and micellar water,” she adds, a step that helps maintain their shape for multiple wears.

Is there a certain glue that's better for strips versus clusters?

“A standard lash glue is suitable for strip lashes, as they are typically for short-term wear,” says Gordon. Clusters, on the other hand, need “a bond and seal dual-ended glue [to] ensure their longevity for 10–14 days.”

Should you be cleaning your lashes if wearing them for extended periods?

Yes, hygiene directly impacts both eye health and wear time. “Lash extensions should be washed daily with an oil-free wash and a Q-tip,” Gordon says, who warns that neglecting this step allows buildup to accumulate. “Your lashes harbor dirt, oil, and bacteria that can cause infection or minimize the longevity of the application,” she explains. And don’t forget to use a gentle eye-makeup remover to cleanse your eyes.

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but mascaras are another story. While some can be used across different lash lengths, thicknesses, shape, colors, and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers’ experience. For instance, a new, innovative mascara may feature an industry-leading formula, but if the wand still needs some tweaking to prevent clumps and webbing, we have to consider this when determining whether it is worthy of a recommendation.

For our review of the best lash glues, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and experts you interviewed for the piece—who all have different lash concerns, desired outcome (i.e., want length over volume), and whether one product was tested across varying lash types. Testers considered performance across three primary categories: efficacy, ease of use, and value. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we can fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

The 20 Best ’70s Makeup Looks, Updated for 2025

All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, we may receive compensation from retailers and/or from purchases of products through these links.

If Allure threw a party at Studio 54 in 1979, the room would be filled with ’70s makeup trends like glittery eye shadows, bushy natural brows, and graphic white eyeliner. (Bianca Jagger would have been invited, but we’d ask her to leave her white horse at home.) If we threw that same party again in 2025, we’d expect to see some familiar looks in the room.

The ’70s brought us disco, the women’s liberation movement, and Charlie’s Angels, so it’s only fitting that this groovy era would have spawned beauty trends that could still hold their own on TikTok. Would-be Fleetwood Mac groupies will relish in bare skin and thick, natural brows. Clubgoers will love bringing back glitter and spiked lower lashes. And Farrah Fawcett herself would approve of the pastel eye shadows and dewy foundation.

To help us bring these trends into 2025, we asked the pros to break down the best ’70s makeup trends and the must-have products to get the look.

    Flushed cheeks

It’s not just any blush. It’s blushy blush—the kind of color you’d get after drinking a Harvey Wallbanger and a few hours on the dance floor. “It gives a youthful, healthy appearance, and it’s perfect for adding some character to your makeup without having to learn any precise technique,” says makeup artist Michael Anthony, who likes a buildable cream blush for this look. “It's easier to add more blush than to take it away, so start with a small amount and build up the color gradually until you achieve your desired intensity,” he says. “Focus on the upper mid-face and across the bridge of the nose.”

Anthony likes YSL Make Me Blush Blurring Liquid Blush, a super-pigmented and blendable formula that he recommends building up with a sponge or your fingers. Pinky Nude is the same natural color you’d get from a night of heavy disco.

He also recommends Rhode Pocket Blush, a silky stick with hydrating ingredients like peptides and tamanu oil. We like Spicy Marg, which is a bit punchy for more of a head-turning flush.

    Pearly shadow

Iris Law with white pearly eyeshadow and glossed lipsInstagram/@irislawfall makeup trends long lashesGetty Images

Shimmery, pearly lids are in the flower child starter kit (with long, wavy hair, micro braids, and a flower crown). While an allover wash of frost is a quick and easy way to get the look, makeup artist Jenny Patinkin also likes just a bit of light-catching shadow in the corners of the eyes or along the lower lash line for a more subtle touch.

The R.E.M. Beauty Midnight Shadows Lustrous Liquid Shadow in Lab Coat is the perfect frosty shadow and can be blended over the lid with your finger. And the Makeup By Mario Master Crystal Reflector powder shadow in Quartz will still give that summer-of-love magic, but it's a bit easier to control than a liquid. If you want more, you can always add it. Patinkin recommends applying the shadow before your undereye concealer, in case any shimmer sprinkles onto your cheeks during application.

    Crease shadow

Yara Shahidi with blue and burgundy crease eyeshadow trendGetty ImagesBella Poarch with neutral brown crease shadow and glossed lipsGetty Images

“Unblended crease liner was the [’70s] precursor to the cut-crease trend,” says Patinkin. To get the look, apply a swipe of deeply pigmented shadow in the socket and resist the urge to blend the edges. Then choose color number two and apply it just to the lid. The result has a groovy, two-tone effect with lots of depth.

A pre-paired shadow duo will help take the guesswork out of mixing and matching colors. We like Nars Cosmetics Duo Eyeshadow in Kuala Lampur (a deep berry) in the crease and a shimmery rose gold on the lid.

Metallic shadows give more of a ’70s Bond girl look. Any two shadows in the Divine Bronze Luxe Quad: Venusian Sunrise—a bronzy quad palette—would give femme fatale. For the most contrast, try the dark brown in the crease and a wash of ivory below.

    Blue eye shadow

spring 2025 makeup trends blue eye shadow on modelLaunchmetricsSommer Ray with light blue eyeshadow and blue cut creaseGetty Images

Says makeup artist Natalie Dresher, “Blue eye shadow gives chic PanAm flight attendant,” a glamorous, pond-hopping dream job in the ’70s. (The haul from London to Cozamel is always sexier with a chilled cocktail in hand.) It also happens to be a cheeky look in 2025, whether you keep it simple with a wash of baby blue or smoke out a swipe of deep blue eyeliner with a matching shadow.

Dresher recommends Stila Stay All Day Smudge and Set Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in Electric Lapis as the base for a nighttime look. Apply along lash lines and use your fingers or a dense shadow brush to diffuse the edges.

Complete the look with a similar rock ’n’ roll blue eye shadow like the Diorshow Mono Couleur in Blue Bayadère. And, if you want to redirect that PanAm flight into outer space, add a prismatic eye gloss for a look with even more shine.

    Thick eyeliner

Vanessa Hudgens with thick black cat eyeliner and slicked back bunGetty Imagesfall 2025 makeup trends smudged linerGetty Images70s makeup inspiration thick eyelinerGetty Images

Seventies-era Cher would never turn her nose up at an eyeliner moment, and in 2025, neither should you. Patinkin recommends sketching your desired shape with an eye pencil before going all-in with pigment. It will save you some serious heartache if you mess up.

The Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Waterline Eyeliner Pencil glides on easily and stays put for hours, which is essential considering the thickness of your lines. Once the shape is in place, fill in the gaps with the Armani Beauty Eye Tint Long-Lasting Liquid Eyeshadow in Ebony. The applicator has a sharp precision tip, but you could also use a smudge brush if you have more real estate to cover.

    Monochromatic makeup

Ariana Grande hair color summer 2025 hair trendsGetty Images

Though the ’70s brought us a wide variety of makeup looks, they pretty much fell into one of two distinct vibes: the sparkle and excess of disco (your Donna Summers and Chaka Khans) or beachy Endless Summer (where you’d find your Goldie Hawns and Jaclyn Smiths). For the latter, simple, monochromatic makeup was key to looking youthful, natural, and sweet, like you were born on a beach and never left. It’s an easy trend to do in 2025: Look for multisticks that you can use on your lips, cheeks, and eyes, and use your hands to apply and blend.

If you could look up the perfect beach babe pink in the dictionary, Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in Coquette would be pictured. The multistick looks great on the cheeks and lips with just a swipe or two of mascara to top it off.

Ilia Multi-Stick's hydrating formula is especially great for sensitive skin (thanks to avocado oil and shea butter) and comes in a few colorways that would bring the ’70s into 2025. A Fine Romance is great for a deeper, sexier flush, and Dear Ruby makes for something more cheerful.

    Frosted lips

Amanda Gorman with pink frosted lips trend and cateye eyelinerGetty Images

Imagine being at the state fair with a swirl of cotton candy on a stick. If you just barely pressed your lips to the spun sugar, you might come away with that same sparkly, frosted, baby-pink color on your mouth. Luckily, Dresher says this ’70s look is trending in 2025, and you can buy it in a tube. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in $weetmouth is a dead ringer for the confection.

    Freckles

Willow Smith with gold eye shadow and frecklesGetty Imagesfaux freckles on model summer makeup trends 2025Launchmetrics

If your ’70s vibe is more “Summer Breeze” than “Saturday Night Fever,” a smattering of freckles across bare skin is all you need. Unfortunately, not all of us have been blessed with such natural cuteness, but there are ways to fake it (or even add more to your existing collection).

Freck OG is just subtle enough to tickle your nose with specks (too dark and it’ll look like your mascara exploded on your face). You can use a brown liquid (like this one in Big Truffle) or gel eyeliner to get the same freckle-smattered effect. A harder pencil will create uniform dots that won’t look natural.

    Statement lower lashes

Ivy Getty with a braided ponytail orange red lipstick and statement lower lashes '70s makeup trendGetty ImagesSydney Sweeney blonde hair spring 2025 hair color trendsGetty Images

If your upper lashes are the lead single on the album, your lower lashes are the underrated B-side. We often overlook them, but they’re sometimes even sexier than the hits. To get Ivy Getty’s ’70s Cher-inspired lashes, Patinkin recommends starting with a tubing mascara to avoid a wet, clumpy mess. "Point the applicator at a perpendicular angle to the eye and swipe mascara back and forth over the lower lash line," she says. If you want an even more dramatic spike, Patinkin recommends using small tweezers to pinch sections of lashes together into little packets of spikes.

“Caliray’s mascara works well for this look because you can control the application without getting big, wet blobs,” says Patinkin. “I find that it doesn’t flake off throughout the day.” Some of us don’t have the patience to flip the record over for the B-side (isn’t that what Spotify is for?) If that’s you, a pre-spiked lower lash strip will save you the time and effort.

    White eyeliner

sophie thatcher haircut summer hair trends 2025Getty ImagesJanelle Monae in a black hat with white negative space eyeliner '70s makeup trendGetty Images

Nothing pairs with a pair of bell-bottoms quite like cheeky white eyeliner. "Even the slightest bit can be so impactful when strategically placed," says makeup artist Kristine Studden. Line the inner corner of the eye to widen, the water line to open it up, create a white flick for a wink of fun, or try a negative-space liner for something graphic like Janelle Monáe. "The options are endless," says Studden.

Studden likes this trusty MAC liner in Pure White. "The color is really rich and pigmented, so it pops off the skin," she says. A pencil works especially well for inner corners and water lines. If you’re looking to create a sharp flick or play with more abstract shapes, a crisp liquid liner pen will glide on more easily. Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner is a fan favorite.

    Soft pink lips

Samara Weaving midi haircut summer hair trends 2025Getty Images

Every decade has its own pink. The ‘50s were filled with baby pink poodle skirts. The ’80s were all about neon. Millennials even have their own chewed-bubblegum pink. In the ’70s, pink was a soft, satiny, almost-nude shade. Charlie’s Angels pink. "Blow a kiss and beat the bad guys" pink. A ’70s pink lip is the perfect trend to bring into 2025 because there’s a hue for every skin tone. Not sure which pink is right for you? Reach for a color-changing balm (like Prada Balm in Astral Pink) that changes with your lips' pH.

    Pastel eye shadow

Suki Waterhouse in a green dress with lavender pastel eyeshadow '70s makeup trendGetty Imagesmodel with light blue eye shadow at Luisa Beccaria Spring 2025Getty Imagesspring 2025 makeup trends pink pastel eye makeup on modelLaunchmetrics

Somewhere during our Palm Royale binge watch, we developed a hankering for poolside vacations and pastel eye shadow. The Palm Springs vacation is pretty pricey, so we’re sticking with the sugar-sweet color wash shadow trend in light blues, lavenders, and pinks. (Pair this trend with the pink lips from above, and Charlie will make you an honorary Angel.)

Pastels, by nature, tend to disappear into the skin. To give the color some punch, Carrillo says start by covering the lids with a white primer or eyeliner. Then, pack on your eye shadow. This e.l.f. palette hits all the trendy ’70s hues—denim blue, lilac, sage, and then some.

    Dewy foundation

kim kardashian fresh skin nomakeup makeupGetty Imagesspring 2025 makeup trends fresh skin at Prabal GurungLaunchmetrics

Foundation in the ’70s was hydrated and dewy, like you had just spent the afternoon at the roller rink and had a light glisten going. You know, the sexy kind. Not the drenched-in-sweat kind. "Dewy is and forever will be the fountain of youth," says Carrillo, who adds that a damp Beautyblender will help to keep things light.

Carrillo applies a buildable foundation with a "gorgeous sheen" on the face, ears, neck, and décolleté. For an extra “ABBA just came on and I hit the rink hard glow,” dab this shimmer-free highlighter along the cheekbones for a touch of sweet dewiness.

    Bushy brows

vanessa kirby with long wavy blonde hair and bushy brows '70s makeup trendGetty ImagesMargaret Qualley side part hairstyle summer hair trends 2025Getty Images

The "’70s bush" wasn’t a term coined for brows, but a bushy brow has ’70s free-spirit energy. In 2025, we curate where they land a bit more. "Just brush your brows lightly into place with gel," says Patinkin. “Step away from the tweezers.”

Patinkin highly recommends this clear brow gel. "It gives great hold without drying stiff or crispy," she says. If your brows are a lighter color or even just a little sparse, a saturated tinted brow gel like Glossier’s Boy Brow will help to give a bushier look without having to painstakingly paint on individual hairs.

    Bronzed skin

Jennifer Lopez hair color summer 2025 hair trendsGetty Images

The very first Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue was printed in 1964. By the 1970s, the special edition was already a cultural phenomenon with icons like Cheryl Tiegs and Christie Brinkley gracing the cover. Many turned to tanning beds and SPF-less tanning oil to get that sandy, ’70s surfer look. We’re a lot smarter now about achieving our beach babe aesthetic. "I love a bronzed look, but only when it’s from a bottle and it mimics the look of tanned skin with products that add that bronzy glow," says makeup artist Dani Kimiko Vincent.

This gradual tanning lotion has won Allure’s Readers' Choice Award for self-tanner many, many times over, thanks to ease of application (no gloves required). For the face, Vincent recommends this moisturizing tint, "which can be used alone or mixed into your moisturizer or SPF for some added glow."

    Glossy lips

hailey bieber with glossy lips and bob haircutGetty Imagesmegan thee stallion lip combo and winged eyeliner at 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar After PartyGetty Imagesglossy lips on model summer makeup trends 2025Launchmetrics

"I love the playfulness of the ’70s sheer lip gloss look," says Vincent. "It’s fun, carefree, youthful, and refreshing," like driving a Firebird with the windows down and Electric Light Orchestra on the radio. Vincent recommends reaching for a simple gloss or lip oil, but prep for this trend will go a long way. “As with any lip product application, it begins with exfoliated lips so there are no snags in the finish.”

Vincent likes the Dior Lip Glow Oil, a glassy, thick gloss that comes in several nude and sheer shades with a touch of shimmer. "These lip oils are nonsticky and have a rich, balmy texture," says Vincent. "I love the mirror gloss shine and the lip-caring formula," which includes nourishing cherry oil.

    Bare skin

Alicia Keys with bare skin natural wedding makeup trendGetty Imagesspring 2025 makeup trends fresh skin at Prabal GurungLaunchmetrics

If Janis Joplin wrote for Allure, she’d be singing the praises of beautiful bare skin. Patinkin agrees, but understands you might have a few spots you want to hide. "Bare skin that gets just a little touch-up with concealer is a great way to balance wanting to look 'perfect' and wanting to look natural," she says. “I like to apply a creamy concealer under the eyes, around the nose, and on the chin.”

If you’re going Janis Joplin bare, all you need is a nourishing moisturizer. Studden likes the dewy shine of Creme de La Mer, either all over or used as a highlighting sheen on the cheekbones.

For a more accessible option, try this juicy, hydrating moisturizer with squalane that provides all-day hydration. If you do want to do a minor touch-up, Patinkin recommends this hydrating concealer. "It wears on the skin so nicely but still has nice coverage," she says.

    Disco eyes

Ava Max in a white dress with silver glitter disco eyeshadow '70s makeup trendGetty Images

If you’re looking for late-night dancing at Studio 54, glittery, shimmery disco eyes are the price of admission. "To get the look at home, finish off your eye shadow by using your finger to place a fine glitter or shimmer over the entire lid, working your way to the outer corners of the shadow," says Vincent. If you want to go all-in on glitter coat your lids with Danessa Myricks Beauty Infinite Chrome Flakes.

    Bold on bold

Lady Gaga in a sheer black dress with orange red lipstick and bold black smokey eye '70s makeup trendGetty ImagesA model at the Moschino RTW SpringSummer 2023 fashion show with bold eyes and bold lips '70s makeup trendGetty Images

If a statement lip is Marilyn Monroe and a statement eye is Sophia Loren, a statement lip and a statement eye together is ’70s Diana Ross. Today, bold on bold is an even more heightened version of Diana’s look—try an orange-red lip and a smoked-out cat eye in a color of your choice. "It's just makeup. It should be fun," says Studden. If this all feels like a lot, Carrillo recommends sticking to berry tones. "Using plums and cranberries is just as dramatic as a blue eye shadow and orange lip," he says.

Studden recommends the Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Liner in a wearable color like Smoky Quartz if you’re just dipping your toes into the bold-on-bold trend, or opt for “a fun, bright tone like Sequin Green.” Find a complementary lipstick color in a slick satin finish. We like Charlotte Tilbury's K.I.S.S.I.N.G Satin Shine Lipstick in Tell Laura, a punchy, orange-red shade like Lady Gaga's.

    Cut-crease liner

Early ’70s Twiggy made us rethink the shape of our eyeliner, and in 2025, her legacy is still seen in our youngest, freshest superstars (Olivia Rodrigo is the patron saint of Gen Z, after all). Cut-crease liner also boasts a little function with its stylish form: "One of the amazing things is it really can reshape an eye," says Carrillo. “If you have a monolid or a hooded lid, it can help to bring back depth.”

Carrillo recommends using the curve of an eyelash curler to trace your cut crease. "Kevyn Aucoin’s eyelash curler is amazing while you’re at it," he says. Because if you’re buying one for a cut crease, you may as well buy one that's great for curling lashes, too. As for your liner, we recommend the Best of Beauty-winning Lisa Eldridge Kitten Flick Liquid Liner, which has an extra-fine tip that helps create crisp lines.

About three years ago, the word “exosome” quietly slipped into the skin-care lexicon. Fast forward to 2025, and it’s seemingly everywhere: A press release for a facialist’s spa recently touted its new “exosome dome” (a futuristic rotunda where you can experience exosome therapy). The facialist insists it’s not “your average dome.” And that exosome cream you’re seeing on beauty shelves? It’s supposedly not your average cream.

Scientifically speaking, exosomes are tiny structures released by cells that contain molecules like proteins, lipids, and genetic material. You can think of them as microscopic delivery trucks—bubble-like forms that facilitate communication and coordination between cells by delivering their molecular cargo, says Ellen Marmur, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. Marisa Garshick, MD, another board-certified dermatologist, notes that when this exchange occurs naturally in the body, it facilitates wound healing as well as other forms of cellular repair and regeneration.

The conversation around exosomes and skin initially centered on exosome therapy: an in-office treatment involving the application of topicals containing these tiny structures across the face following microneedling and laser resurfacing. Although there are currently no FDA-approved exosome treatments on the market, JuveXO and Exovex are examples of exosome-infused product lines designed for use in-office after these procedures.

Marnie Nussbaum, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, explains that exosomes have been shown in lab settings to elevate the concentration of growth factors that increase collagen and elastin, leading to improved skin laxity, a reduction in hyperpigmentation, and wound healing. In short, slathering exosomes onto your face after microneedling and lasers may reduce healing time and improve skin quality.

We’re also starting to see the potential use of exosomes in the hair-loss space. “Some people have done studies with exosomes…supplying them directly to an intact scalp and getting hair growth,” says Todd E. Schlesinger, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and co-author of the scientific literature review The Role of Exosomes in Medical Dermatology. But the evidence is still anecdotal. “You’ll find a bit of research here and there—mostly small studies, case reports, or series involving just a few patients.”

So what does that mean for your skin-care routine outside of a doctor’s office? Most products that tout exosomes as an active ingredient are focused on rejuvenation and regeneration, claiming to address visible signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity, but the science to back up these claims is currently lacking, plus there’s no industry standardization or regulation for sourcing or manufacturing exosomes for cosmetic use.

And yet, the hype only continues to grow. So does any of this stuff actually work? Should we be concerned about product safety? And where are companies getting all these exosomes from anyway? We asked dermatologists and cosmetic chemists for their thoughts. Below are our eight biggest takeaways.

    1. Ask 13 dermatologists and chemists about the benefits of exosome skin-care products and you'll get 13 different answers.

When we first started reporting on the role exosomes play in skin care, we received responses couched with phrases like, “They might do this,” or, “I guess, theoretically, they may…”

Dr. Nussbaum hopes that exosomes will enhance the skin repair process. Compared to other topical skin-care ingredients, Dr. Marmur says exosomes might be able to survive longer in the skin’s defensive environment due to their protective structures. Corey L. Hartman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Birmingham, Alabama, is less convinced of their abilities. “I don't even think that exosomes penetrate deep enough to be effective,” he says.

    2. One thing many of them can agree on: Exosome products hit the market way too quickly.

Let’s get this out of the way: No one we spoke to could definitively say that exosome skin-care products work. Dr. Schlesinger says that there are too many unknowns to confidently attribute the benefits seen during use to exosomes in over-the-counter topical skin care. “Everyone in clinical dermatology and research dermatology is saying the same thing: We need the science,” he says. “We're looking to these companies to produce the data.”

“I’d say it feels like the hype outweighs the proven results—maybe about 70% hype and 30% science.”

Dr. Marmur agrees. “On one hand, exosomes do represent a novel and promising approach to skin regeneration,” she says. On the other hand, these launches “have outpaced the science.” She continues, “I’d say it feels like the hype outweighs the proven results—maybe about 70% hype and 30% science.”

    3. The exosomes in your products are typically from three organic sources.

    Humans

Some products are infused with exosomes created from human stem cells or platelets from blood. Dr. Marmur explains that in theory, “human exosomes ‘speak the same language’ as our own cells, making it easier for them to deliver their message and trigger changes like increased collagen or healing.” However, the materials inside exosomes derived from organic sources (like human stem cells) vary depending on the exact source.

One example of a product containing human-derived exosomes is Dr. Barbara Sturm Exoso-Metic Face Serum. These exosomes are lab-engineered from human DNA originally sourced from accredited tissue banks. According to the brand, they’re produced using recombinant protein technology, a process that inserts a targeted human gene into lab-cultured bacteria. After “reading” the DNA, the bacteria produce exosomes, which are then incorporated into the Exoso-Metic products. The end-product contains no original human material.

    Animals

According to Dr. Schlesinger, exosomes are typically derived from humans and plants. However, some products utilize exosomes derived from animal blood plasma. “I know there are some companies looking at canine exosomes,” says Dr. Schlesinger. As with pretty much any product that contains animal-derived ingredients, this raises a host of questions about the animals’ welfare and whether these exosomes are ethical to use.

Some brands use animal byproducts. For example, Beekman 1802’s Milk Rx Advanced Better Aging Cream uses exosomes derived from goat milk proteins, collected from the goats raised on their farm. You can take a peek at how they're being treated here.

    Plants

Many of these products use exosomes from plants. Kelly Dobos, a cosmetic chemist and adjunct professor of cosmetic science at the University of Cincinnati, notes that plant-based exosomes may offer benefits like lower production costs, longer shelf life, and fewer regulatory hurdles. Some experts also suggest that plant-derived exosomes are likely safer than those sourced from humans or animals. A representative from The Inkey List explains that the brand’s Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex uses exosomes from the Centella asiatica (cica) plant, which are “cultivated under controlled lab conditions using sustainable tissue cultures, ensuring a level of consistency and purity that human-derived alternatives simply cannot guarantee at this stage.”

But pros also say plant-derived exosome have their own share of pitfalls. Dobos explains that because the type of plant and the growing conditions can vary, the quality of plant-derived exosomes may be inconsistent. “These vesicles tend to be larger than human exosomes, and less is known about their uptake in human systems, so there are still many unknowns with plant-derived exosomes,” she says.

The dermatologists we spoke to are skeptical about how these botanical options interact with our (obviously human) cells. “The benefits of plant-derived exosomes may not be as biologically targeted or effective in activating the same regenerative responses that human-derived stem cell exosomes potentially can,” says Dr. Marmur.

    4. Some exosome products don’t have exosomes at all.

There are also lab-synthesized, “exosome-like” ingredients in play. According to Dr. Marmur, some brands aim to mimic the delivery function of an organically derived exosome through a substitute ingredient. “These systems might be more stable, easier to produce, and safer than using actual biological material,” she says. “But again, the effectiveness of ‘exosome-like’ systems will depend on what’s being delivered, how well it’s absorbed, and whether these alternatives will be able to effectively interact with human cells and produce results.”

The process used to create synthetic exosomes (which are essentially protective transportation vehicles that house ingredients) for use in skin care is “old science,” says Dr. Marmur. She likens lab-synthesized exosomes to formulas with encapsulated ingredients or delayed-release delivery systems. For instance, SkinFix uses biomimetic—that is, human-made technology that mimics things found in nature—exosomes in its Exo + Ectoin Intensive Repair Baume. Dobos says they are liposomes, tiny fat capsules that have been commonly used as delivery systems in cosmetics for about 40 years. According to Krupa Koestline, a cosmetic chemist in Orlando, Florida, synthetic exosomes and liposomes are “90% the same,” with some minor differences. For example, in some cases, Koestline says synthetic exosomes are enhanced with surface proteins to differentiate them from traditional liposomes and improve their targeting.

    5. The benefits you’re seeing from your exosome skin care might be due to other ingredients in the formula.

One major issue with exosome skin care is that it can be unclear whether the intended effects of the product are actually caused by exosomes or by other ingredients. Exosome skin-care products never feature just exosomes. Ingredients that are proven to do things like increase hydration and support collagen production—ceramides, glycerin, peptides, squalene—also commonly make an appearance in these new exosome-infused formulas.

Beyond it not being clear if it’s these tried-and-true ingredients or the newly buzzy exosomes that are doing the heavy lifting, Dobos says the data is lacking on which ingredients pair best with exosomes. She explains that there are limited peer-reviewed studies on the synergy of specific ingredient combinations. And even if exosomes do have a glow-boosting effect, it's unclear how much needs to be added to the formula for it to be effective, according to Dobos.

“If exosomes were pistachios, [these products are] like buying a bag of mixed nuts. There might be some pistachios inside, but they’re only a small fraction of the mix.”

“True exosomes require strict manufacturing standards and release criteria, while most products contain a broader blend of extracellular vesicles and other secretions,” adds Saranya Wyles, MD, PhD, a board-certified dermatologist and researcher at the Mayo Clinic, who specializes in regenerative medicine. “If exosomes were pistachios, [these products are] like buying a bag of mixed nuts. There might be some pistachios inside, but they’re only a small fraction of the mix.”

    6. The FDA has some thoughts about exosome products.

Exosomes have been making headlines in the United States since roughly 2019, when the FDA issued a public safety notification regarding the use of unapproved exosome treatments in clinics across the country, noting that the clinics were advertising unproven claims that these exosome treatments could “prevent, treat, or cure various diseases or conditions.” According to Michele Green, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, this notice was likely in reference to injectable exosomes because they are classified as biological drugs and require FDA approval.

Another FDA consumer alert was released in July 2020, reiterating that the FDA regulates the use of exosomes in regenerative medicine products and that no FDA-approved exosome products exist. A CDC warning regarding stem cell and exosome products (originally published in 2019, but now archived) specifically noted that the FDA has not approved any exosome products for any uses.

That doesn’t mean the companies selling exosome skin-care are inherently breaking any laws or selling products that are unsafe. Topical cosmetics, in general, are not required to be FDA-approved before they are sold unless they contain certain color additives. So, technically, any of your serums and creams that contain hyaluronic acid, peptides, or other active ingredients are probably not FDA-approved either.

    7. Other countries don’t allow the use of animal-derived exosomes in cosmetic products.

While the US hasn’t explicitly banned the use of animal-derived (including human) exosomes, other countries have. In Europe, “guidelines are more stringent. Anything animal- or tissue-derived is not seen as recommended for cosmetic use,” says Dr. Schlesinger, adding that the same goes for Japan. That means the products produced in these countries are made from plants.

    8. Using exosome skin-care products comes with a degree of risk.

Dhaval G. Bhanusali, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, explains that while exosomes have the potential to deliver benefits, they may also lead to unintended effects. Sure, they can support collagen production and reduce inflammation, but in theory, they could also increase inflammation or contribute to disease.

Dr. Schlesinger agrees and emphasizes the need for more research. “Right now, it's not that it's unsafe; we just don't know enough,” he says. “We don’t fully understand what’s in the exosomes or what exactly is causing the effects we’re seeing. From a safety standpoint, some people worry that they could cause cancer or other issues. But the truth is, exosomes are involved in nearly every function in the body, both healthy and unhealthy.”

The bottom line is that, due to limited research on exosome skin care, it's unclear whether there's cause for concern. Allure editors have tested plenty of these new exosome skin-care products without any immediate negative effects, but generally aren’t convinced they’re any better than the stuff already in our routines. If you want to give exosomes a try, you’re probably safe to do so—just don’t expect any skin-care miracles.
